Rakodi as a pendant on an adjustable cotton thread.
'Kemp', in some Indian languages, means red. Its origin can be traced back to Vadasery, in Nagercoil district of TamilNadu. This jewellery thrived under the patronage of the Chola, Pandya and Rayar dynasty. The jewels adorned the deities in the temple made of silver with gold covering along with precious stones, but, occasionally, they were used by the devadasis during special dance performances too. Thus this jewellery became widely popular as Dance Jewelry. One can see the use of Kemp jewelry in Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi dance forms. Apart from Jewelry, Kemp Stones were also used in Tanjore paintings.
The frames often have motifs like serpent, peacock, swan, parrot and flowers.
